This book is a great beach read for a Sunday afternoon. Get a comfy chair and sit on the beach in Emerald Isle and read away. It only takes about 4 hours to read the book. I loved reading about the people and places I see everyday. I enjoyed reading the sequel to The Bridge - nice to end a story.
Only concern is you are not suppose to sprinkle ashes at the beach - you need to go offshore 3 nautical miles.
Another well written book by Tom Gill. His descriptions put you physically at Emerald Isle. You virtually are visiting historical locations, smelling entrees from local eateries, feeling salt spray from the Atlantic, and his characters come alive with the day to day happenings of their lives.
The author, Thomas P. Gill, helps readers grasp the story by incorporation of the human senses when he describes the sight, sound, and smell of the glorious Atlantic Ocean and surrounding area of Emerald Isle. The eye-catching book cover shows the beautiful coast at one of its most splendid moments. I enjoyed his interesting way of weaving names of local establishments, especially restaurants and employees known well to him, to add a personal touch. Should make the reader want to pack their car and head to the beach for a sun-drenched vacation and plenty of good seafood.
My emotions were stirred with his tribute to the military, description of turtle preservation and ongoing activities of the N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, as well as hurricane preparedness for those living or visiting the coastal areas of N.C. With a pace based on Island Time, and a slack attitude towards the clock, Emerald Isle is a place that can refresh the spirit and cleanse the soul. There is no generation gap for this good read.
Emerald Isle, North Carolina, now holds a place in my vacation plans because of Thoma P Gill's book! His story unfolded and took me away like Dr Who's TARDIS. The TARDIS is just like a book innocuous on the outside, bigger on the inside, and able to transport me through space and time just as this book was able to do!
I was anticipating this to be a sad book, being that it is part two after Thomas' first book, THE BRIDGE. I wasn't sure I wanted to read further but won't spoil it for those who haven't yet purchased and read the first book. Kirby, and her son, Journey, take an adventure which led me to places I didn't consider. There was a fire to Kirby's character, along with her early on sadness, that made me follow the story-line more intensely. There are a few chapters of "drama" (which, again, I won't spoil for new readers) but I got TICKED OFF at one of the characters. I could envision this book becoming a movie (tv or big screen.) RETURN TO EMERALD ISLE also taught me about "turtle watches." Thanks for the good read, Thomas!
Well it was definitely better than the first one. I wasn't constantly annoyed by the dialouge, thinking that real people don't talk like this. So that's an improvement. It just didn't hold my interest enough to finish it. Life is too short to finish a book, just to finish it, when you really don't care at all how it ends.
Very thoughtful story. Left a lasting impression.
This is a good read, especially since I live in Emerald Isle, NC.
